Philip James Bailey (18161902) was an English poet, best known as the author of 'Festus', a voluminous poem strongly influenced by Goethe's 'Faust'. It was first published in 1839 and ran into numerous expanded editions over the rest of the 19th century: the 'Jubilee' edition, from which these extracts were selected, numbered 794 pages. This miniature edition of extracts chosen by the publisher Albert Broadbent was 'issued solely with the object of making Mr Philip J Bailey's great masterpiece more widely known, and also to bring to the author that increased recognition which his genius demands.'
