Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. Edition originale.

Softcover. Condition: g+ to vg. First edition. Octavo. 58, [2]pp. Illustrated tan wrappers, with woodcut design and lettering in black on the font cover. B/w photographic reproduction frontispiece portrait of the author. Inscribed and signed by the author in blue ink, on the title page. This scarce collection of poetry by Polish writer, activist, and soldier Izabela Stachowicz (1893-1969) was written between 1942 and 1944. During this time she was confined with her fellow Polish Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust, and later fought with the Soviet-backed partisans of the People's Army against the occupying Germans. These 15 powerful poems recount her harrowing experiences and traumas during the period. As stated in her forward, Stachowicz carried these poems written on scraps of paper, hidden on her person during those dangerous circumstances, knowing full well that she would meet a violent death at the hands of the Germans if they were discovered. However she says that holding onto them gave her the strength to continue and survive during those horrible times. The end of each poem notes where and when it was written. The book is published under the a name Izabela Gelbard, with the author using the last name of her late second husband, the Polish architect and artist Jerzy Gelbard (1894-1944), who during this period died in the Majdanek concentration camp. The author was also known under the pseudonym Por. Czajka ("Lieutenant Czajka") first created as a fake identity during the war years, which she continued to use on certain occasions after the war. Introductory text by the famed Polish poet, writer, translator W?adys?aw Broniewski (1897-1962). The final pages included a table of contents and a word of thanks from the author, as well as a loose errata sheet laid in. Text in Polish. Wrappers with some light stains. Front wrapper tearing slightly at the top of the hinge, and a small chip at the top right and bottom right corners. Interior clean, with pages age-toned and slightly brittle throughout. A few small marginal closed tears to a few pages. Wrappers in good+, interior in very good condition overall. Izabela Stachowicz (1893-1969, aka "Por. Czajka") was a Polish writer, activist, resistance fighter and soldier. Originally born Izabela Schwarz to a Polish-Jewish family in Sosnowiec, she moved to Warsaw at a young age. After a cosmopolitan education in Warsaw, she studied in Vienna and Berlin, finally graduating from the School of Fine Arts in Paris. She was active in literary and artistic circles at the time, as acted as a muse to numerous writers and artists. She published her first book, a nautical travelogue to South America, in 1937, under the pseudonym "Iza Bell". She returned to Poland with her second husband Jerzy Gelbard, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. As previously mentioned, she and her husband were confined to the Warsaw Ghetto during the war. She survived the liquidation of the Ghetto, but her husband died in the Majdanek Concentration camp in 1944. She subsequently fought with the People's Army through the end of the war, and later served as a lieutenant in the Polish Army. On behalf of the National Museum in Warsaw she worked to recover works of art and other national cultural assets which were stolen during the war. In the following years she wrote numerous works, championed Polish artists, and remain socially and politically active.
