"In 1809, French Hugenot immigrant and cobbler Jean (John) Jacques (1790-1876) settled in Little York [later renamed Washingtonville], and established a shop in the tannery owned by Moses Ely on the corner of North and Main Streets. [Afte…r some years working as a shoemaker] Jacques experimented with the cultivation of grapes to produce wine, and by 1839 he had purchased land to the north of his store to expand production. Today, Brotherhood Winery is the oldest continuously operating winery in the United States" (Thorenz, Blooming Grove and Washingtonville, p. 9).
