Third printing. Address label belonging to Elizabeth Lay attached to front pastedown. Lay was anorganist and pianist, active in organ societies and guilds internationally and locally, including the American Guild of Organists in Tacoma, WA. She also played for many area Christian Science Churches. However, because of her age, she is likely only responsible for the copy of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" taped to a rear flyleaf. The gift inscription on a front flyleaf reads "To J.F.W.J. whocan sing these From E.H.J. who loves to hear her. December 1925". This owner is likely responsible for the rest of the ephemera that has been added to the book including articles about the Johnson brothers, H.T. Burleigh, and Paul Laurence Dunbar. A very interesting early printing that has become a sort of time capsule of this era of civil rights and its impact on the arts scene. 4to. 187pp. Cloth boards stamped in brown and blue seemingly painted over, spine and corners worn, several articles pasted in, including the 1916 offprint "H, T. Burleigh: Composer by Divine Right. (1 in OCLC). Address label and gift inscriptions from previous owner(s), pencil markings throughout, very good.
