Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [quite a decent copy, the front hinge a bit weak but holding together, with a bit of wear along the top edge of the rear cover, slight fading at the spine]. "Marriage or Death! -- that was the decision that faced Perry Bannister, notorious Don Juan, when he is tra…pped into a meeting with five of his former flames: a film star who has a bodyguard of Mexican desperadoes; a girl noted as a good shot; a woman who is drunk enough to do something despearte; a married woman with a fierce husband; a dancer who portrays, symbolically, the act of strangling a man. Which of these has writen the note ordering him to propose to her before three o'clock in the morning?" Despite the presence of a movie star in the goings-on (by the name of "Avon Dawn"), this isn't really a "Hollywood novel" per se: most of the action takes place at Ms. Dawn's seaside estate in Ensenada, Mexico. (And despite the mention of her "Mexican desperado" bodyguards, it's never really made clear whether Avon Dawn herself is Mexican, although perhaps the reader was meant to intuit that from an early description of her as "both imperious and tempestuous.") The author (not to be confused with the modern-day novelist Eleanor Brown) cranked out a number of novels, mostly in the "women's fiction" vein for the rental-library market, during the 1930s -- although we should allow for the fact that "Eleanore Browne" may well have been a pseudonym (heck, "she" could have been the prolific and facile Jack Preston, for all I know). This title was later published as "The Immodest Maidens" in the Novel Library paperback series in 1949.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Good dj. First Edition. (price-clipped) [good solid copy, some darkening/spotting to top edge of text block, very slight rippling of cloth on rear cover, old gift inscription rather messily crossed-out/erased on front pastedown, rear endpaper removed; jacket is moderately soiled and heavily edgew…orn, with paper loss at spine extremities, various small nicks and tears]. European-set mystery novel, involving "the formation of an international cordon of detectives," with the greatest sleuths from London, Paris, Berlin, Leningrad, and "even Warsaw" coordinating their pursuit of a cunning and murderous jewel thief known as The Panther. (There is no indication as to whether Inspector Clouseau was recruited for the team.). Illustrated by (dj) Parkhurst (illustrator).

[solid reading copy only, spine turned, spotting/soiling to page edges, original owner's name and address on front pastedown; jacket worn and soiled, large pieces missing at both ends of spine, long closed tear across front panel (internally tape-mended and not too obtrusive),…various other tears but I'm sure you've got the idea by now]. Romance novel with an ambitious heroine, Holly, to whom "the green fields of far-off pastures were more alluring than her own less glamorous surroundings. And love in an easy tempo of peaceful security was something that didn't fit into her romanticized dream of life. She didn't want peace and calm days. Clayton Brown represented enduring love in a quiet place. Jelke Sutter was glamour -- and danger. Holly wanted adventure -- and found it." (This author's name is rendered as Eleanore Browne on most of her other works.). Illustrated by (dj) Charles Zingaro (illustrator).

With a touch of soiling to the front boards but very clean and tight throughout; virtually unread. In a near-fine original dust jacket designed by Irving Politzer with the price of $2.00 at the top… of the inside front flap. This is a lovely, collectible copy in a very crisp and clean dust jacket. "You have never read anything quite so effervescentas this delicious story.A politician purposes to win votes by pioneering a new demagoguery--the curious suggestion that men be faithful to their wives! A husband complains that his beautiful wife is to virtuous! A young lady of this irreverent age insists that it is bad enough to be untarnished without having that discredit advertised to the whole of one's crowd!
