He was reared there, in a largely barter economy, among the ragged and independent peasant-fishermen. When young, Bru worked as as fisherman aboard an old wooden cutter, and later as a farm labourer in Denmark, where he graduated from agricultural college. While serving as an agricultural consultant in his native islands, he continue.
