First edition. 8vo Four volumes plus volume of plates. Vol 1: 1836, pp [iv], 547. Vol 2: 1841, pp 680. Vol 3 1845 [iv], 646. Vol 4 1846 viii, 680. Vol 5: Atlas: pp 16, followed by loose set of 48 plates, 9 in brown bistre, 39 with attractive hand-colouring. First four volumes in matching quarter green calf on marbled boards, edges speckled, speckled endpapers, marbled paper abraded on boards especially to Volume 1, internally slight foxing to volume two and the Atlas plates a little thumbed, overall clean examples (please see photos). The plate volume is in its original publishers wrappers, wrappers worn. A rare set, difficult to find complete. The preface to Volume 4 explains that due to the age and indisposition of le Comte Lepeletier, M. Aug. Brulle has stepped in to finish off the work as best as can be done. The plates show a very high level of colouring.
