XX [From the preface] The theoretical synthesis attempted in this study arose from an increasingly uncomfortable feeling that existing frames of reference in American archaeology do not explain all the available evidence. Explanations for local and regional sequences frequently do not harmonize with generally accepted hypotheses concerning the development of Native American culture. Such disharmony is simply a reflection of the fact that our conceptual understanding of American prehistory is just emerging from infancy. A basic framework of theory must be constructed which attempts to explain the known facts of American archaeology as well as to stimulate development of a theoretically oriented program for guiding future research. In this study I have presented a model illustrating an evolutionary theory which might help the reader to appreciate the significance of much of the available evidence concerning early man in America. XX Contents: Introduction, Methodological Concepts, The Present Status of Wisconsin Glacial Chronology, Development of American Projectile Point Traditions, Postulated Earlier Paleo- American Technological Traditions, Synopsis, Cultural Evolution and The Question of Cultural Laws, Index to Appendix, Appendix of Site Summaries, Bibliography.

Current Anthropology, Volume 10, Number 4 Part I complete issue. first edition. Recent research on the late Pleistocene of northwester North America has a considerable bearing on the study of early man in America. The first part of this paper deals with late glacial chronology and the implications of this chronology from the study of early man throughout America; the second part is an attempt at a synthesis of the early man problem in the light of the hypotheses presented in the first. A somewhat more detailed exposition of the evidence for the glacial chronology presented here is to be published elsewhere. Condition: Corners bumped, light edge wear else very good.
