Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Paul Orban (illustrator). 1st Edition. STATED FIRST EDITION! NOT a library discard; privately owned hardback book with dust jacket. The very good minus jacket is NOT price-clipped ($2.00). The jacket has some rubbing and small chips/tears (see photos). It looks very nice under the fresh mylar cover I've added. The light blue book is sturdy and complete but there is some bleached out areas where the covers have white spotting (which is why I only rated the book as "Good"). Clean and neat text pages with supple paper and owner name inside. Wonderful Alex Schomburg endpapers!

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A very good copy of Professor V Gordon Childe's account of the final excavation and conservation of Skara Brae at Skaill in Orkney. The original excavation in the mid 1800's after the site was revealed by a storm, was undertaken before there was an understanding that there should be a methodical and systematic approach with comprehensive recording. There has been further small excavations but the site was then left open and there was further damage from a storm in 1924. The site was put under the guardianship of H M Commissioners of Works in 1924 and over the next few years, the site was re- excavated and then conserved. This book gives a full account and is supplemented by papers on the human remains and animal bones. It is profusely illustrated and has 60 photographic plates, a colour plan, and 2 sections at the rear. The brown cloth binding is in very good clean condition. The front board has a few small paler areas and the spine is slightly faded with pulling to ends. Back board with light fading at the top. The corners have light wear. Internally there is an inscription dated Christmas 1934 on the front free endpaper. The contents are complete and very clean. There is a little spotting to the foredge and some light spotting to preliminaries (up to the illustration list).
