The essays also consider how research material continues to emerge, while cautioning that discoveries may not be what they first appear to be. The introduction discusses a chrysobull granted by Alexios III of Trebizond to the monastery of Soumela in 1364, its rediscovery in the Ayasofya Museum in Istanbul, and questions about the portraits accompanying the document. It also notes connections between Trebizond and Moldovlachia, including the activities of Soumelan monks and scholars and the work of Sebastos Kyminites.
