Seit 1853 Archivrat, verließ er 1858 das Oberkonsistorium und leitete den Gothaer Kunstverein. Er schrieb Gedichte und gab u.a. "Das herzogliche Kunstkabinett zu Gotha" (1853) heraus (Saur, DBE).- An Paul Alois Klar (s. Wurzbach XII, 14ff.; 1801-1860), den Herausgeber des Taschenbuchs "Libussa": "Herr Robert Köhler in Dresden hat mich benachrichtigt, daß Sie mein kleines Gedicht 'Hülfe von Oben' der Aufnahme in Ihre Libussa für 1859 nicht unwerth gefunden [.] Ich fühle mich dadurch hocherfreut und Ihnen zu innigem Dank verpflichtet: Indem ich diesem Dank Ausdruck leihe, verbinde ich damit zugleich den Wunsch, daß dieß für mich der Anfang einer längeren Literarischen Verbindung mit Ihnen . sein möge [.]".
