'Tutor of Mary Queen of Scots and King James VI, (he) was a Renaissance figure of European repute. His contemporaries saw him as 'easily the premier poet of the age' and praised the quality of a critical mind that ranged over multiple concerns vital to the Europe of his day. His writing, whether in the cosmopolitan Latin of his time, or in a homely vernacular, mirrored these wide concerns, as a university man of distinction, a poet and master of new styles, a playwright in a modern idiom, a controversial historian and popular pamphleteer at the center of contemporary religious and political storms'. (Durkan p. IX) Remains of Buchanan's correspondence were collected by James Oliphant, member of a high Scottish clan, and published by him in 1711. The collection consists of 35 letters to and from Buchanan. The last modern edition, MacFarlane 1981, contains 59 letters. Not all the letters which Oliphant published were based on the poet's autographs.
