The object of the present work is to give to scholars a complete copy of the text which is inscribed on the outside and inside of the Sarcophagus of Anchnesraneferab; and an interlinear transliteration and translation, which may be useful to beginners, and to those who take an interest in the Egyptian language. The translation underneath the text is as literal as the difference between the English and Egyptian languages will allow; but for the convenience of the reader a free rendering of the whole has been given in the Introduction. As the genders of the nouns in the Egyptian text are often confounded, the same confusion has at times proved unavoidable. In the preparation of this work I have had much assistance from my revered chief Dr. [Samuel] Birch. From Mr. [Peter] Le Page Renouf I have received the greatest help; and, in spite of the innumerable calls upon his time, he has allowed me to read over the whole text and translation with him twice, and has assisted me in the correction of the proofs. Owing to the kindness of Mr. W. H. Rylands, F.S.A., who supplied the drawings from which the uncommon hieroglyphics were made, the text on the Sarcophagus has been exceedingly well represented in type; while the excellent drawings of Mrs. Rylands (nee Martin) will give a correct idea of the arrangement of the text, and the character of the reliefs on the cover and inside of the Sarcophagus.
