Corners bumped with cardboard exposed there and at spots along edges of boards, 5 inch tear along front joint, ¾ inch fraying at head and foot of spine, (tape repaired with cellophane tape) , some soil rubbing and drop marks. Internally, front hinge partially cracked, shaken, 2 inch deep piece of the lower edge of the tissue guard adjoining the frontispiece torn out, neat underlining and a bit of marginalia on pp 447 - 556, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. 1889. FAIR / NO DJ. 576 pp. Pages are somewhat toned but almost all are clean and unmarked. Some small smudges on the initial pages in the foreward and table of contents, clean after that. Includes 250 engravings by various artists, both black and white and many full color plates. Color plates are still birght and vivid, almost all still have their protective sheet of tissue. Color frontispiece has small tear in bottom margin, coming loose from binding at top. Front hinge is completely cracked; pages 417-432 have disengaged from binding (but are still held together as a subsection). Boards covered in greenish fabric elaborated embossed with gold, white and black imagery and titling. Worn to boards at corners, top and tail of spine. Edges are in surprisingly good condition, and while somewhat smudged and scuffed (most noticeable on back cover), exterior is not bad for the age of the item.

Leather. Condition: Fair - Cash. Red cover with embossed illustrations on the cover and spine. There is gold lettering and detailing to the cover and spine as well. There's wear to the cover and edges. The boards are showing in the corners of the cover. There are several tears at the top and bottom of the spine. The pages show reader wear. The gold edges of the pages are still vibrant, with a few dull spots at the corners. The pages appear to be unmarked. They may have some water staining. There are a few cracks in the spine throughout the book. The binding is a little lose, but the pages are all secure. Stock photos may not look exactly like the book.
