First edition. viii, 248pp. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Scotland for the first time in September 1842, and during their visit, they stayed at various castles as guests of members of the Scottish nobility. Scotland became one of her favourite haunts after the purchase of Balmoral Castle a few years later. This book is a full description of her visit, starting with her embarkation at Woolwich and the voyage to Scotland. It includes accounts of the visits to Edinburgh, Leith, Dalkeith, the Highlands, Dunkeld, Taymouth, Perth and Stirling. There are various lists such as the Royal Archers and her Majesty's Body-Guard for Scotland; descriptions of ladies' dresses; accounts of bonfires and other rejoicings; and descriptions of Balls. The book has fairly recently been re-backed and re-cased in the original grrey-blue cloth covered boards with the original spine laid onto new cloth, and as a result the book is now tight and secure. The original boards and spine have shelf wear and fairly noticeable soiling and staining and the original paper title label on the spine is worn and soiled with small pieces missing from the edges. The corners are bumped with damage and some loss to the cloth around the tips. The contents are tight and the book has new grey endpapers. The pages are clean apart from a few scattered marks and small stains from finger smudges, etc., and the title-page has some light soiling and small marks. There is no inscription.

Transcribed and edited by James Buist. James Robertson was Sheriff Substitute of North Argyll between 1842 and 1846. Based at Tobermory, he kept a concise record of his stay in a series of diaries, most of which have survived. Carefully transcribed and edited by James Buist Loudon, they are now published for the first time. With their incisive insights into people and events, they have much to offer the historian and enthusiast. By illuminating people, manners and the preconceptions of the time, they shed light on social history. Local lairds stride through its pages, and emigrant ships anchor in the bay. The Sheriff Substitute was clearly a sociable man, on one occasion nothing that two emigrants, Moydart men called: crack and dram, though often lamenting lack of congenial company. He also had a keen sense of humour as his dry account of a thoroughly wet tourist excursion to Iona makes clear. Whether relating serious issues, such as the problems of the would-be emigrants, or making almost inconsequential arrangements to retrieve a night shirt and cap from an Oban hotel, James Robertson allows us a possible unique insight into his own working life and, though his eyes, into life on the island in the mid 19th century.
