The French corrida rarely leads to injuries to the bulls; the skill being in snatching rosettes from their horns. This one still takes place in the old Roman arena in Arles; I attended one in the early 1970s but remember little of it after a convivial dinner earlier in the evening!

Cuban broadside advertising a bullfight featuring matador Don Manuel Rodriguez Lanza and the "8 toros de muerte." The top of the sheet features a woodcut of a matador holding his cape out to a bull. The first swordsman for the fight is Manuel Diaz Lavi, with two alternates listed. The names of the Banderilleros and Picadores for the fight are also noted. Bullfighting was a popular entertainment in Cuba during the Spanish colonial period, though it was done away with after Cuban independence at the beginning of the 20th century. Broadside, 12½ × 8 inches. Printed on green paper. Old fold lines. Light wear and soiling, minor separation at some folds. A few contemporary notations. Very good.

Add to basketFolio broadside (310 x 435 mm), a grid of 48 woodblock printed scenes, some captioned; lightly browned with a tiny paper flaw at the left margin at the image, but no loss. . Scarce pictorial narrative of a bullfight. This takes the form of an auca, a comic-like art form particularly popular in Catalonia. It depicts the stages of a bullfight: the opening ceremony and procession, the introduction of the bull, the various combative methods, and the bull's eventual demise. Strikingly dynamic, the images evoke the movement through the air of the picadors and matadors as they are tossed around by the bull before it meets its end. The Piferrer publishing house was established by Juan Piferrer in the early 18th century and ran until 1868. (Amades 84).

A scarce suite of photographs showing the world of Costa Rican bullfighting in the mid-20th century, all taken by the photographer Jose Valverde. Though Costa Rican bullfighting currently differs from the Spanish variety in that the aim is to only dodge the bulls and not to kill them, the form practiced here appears to be more in line with the Spanish version, with many of the bulls shown with spears protruding from them as they charge the bullfighters. Notably, four photographs show women bullfighters, notable as this was the period when women first worked as bullfighters. Overall an uncommon survival. Silver gelatin photographs, 8 x 10 inches. Some with inscriptions to the photographer, Jose Valverde, by the various bullfighers. Near fine with minimal wear.

Broadside. Broadside. 9-1/4" x 12-1/4." Printing on recto only. Old folds with closed tears starting at the folds; some chipping; paper is toned. In fair to good condition. Fragile. A broadside announcement for a bullfight in Juarez, Mexico. The announcement is in both Spanish and English. Curiously it announces this as a farewell fight but names two teens: Manolito and Joselito, 13 and 15 respectively. Also noting that no horses will be used. An interesting artifact that is clearly aimed at both Ciudad Juarez and El Paso across the river.
