A rare and attractive promotional print of Chang and Eng, the conjoined twins whose popularity in Europe and America in the 1830s gave birth to the phrase "Siamese Twins." Born near Bangkok in 1811, the conjoined twins lived and worked with their mother until they encountered the Scottish merchant and "unofficial diplomat" Robert Hunter in 1824. After several years, he was able to cajole them into accompanying him on a five-year tour of Europe and the United States. They arrived first in Boston in August of 1829 and then swiftly moved on to Great Britain in November; by December of that year they were being displayed at the Egyptian Hall. The twins' role was not only to stand and be gawked at; they were healthy and athletic young men, and entertained audiences by playing sports and speaking with visitors. They eventually broke from their erstwhile managers in the mid-1830s and continued touring and performing in North America and Europe under their own auspices. After becoming their own bosses, the twins reworked their public image to be more mature and cultured, answering audience questions in a parlor discussion setting or playing chess and other games, as evidenced in the present print. The pair settled down in North Carolina in 1839, where they married sisters and lived quite comfortably for many years as slave-holding plantation owners. As their family grew and proceeds from their tour dwindled, they returned to the stage briefly in the 1850s and then more seriously in the 1860s, when they became a powerful public metaphor for the "conjoined" Union and Confederacy. The illustration at hand, published near the end of their original 1829-1839 international tour, shows Chang and Eng dressed sharply in fine clothes and standing in an elegantly appointed room. Eng holds a book open to a titlepage and frontispiece showing the twins, and a table in the background contains an in-progress game of chess. OCLC records four copies of this uncommon print, at the New-York Historical Society, the University of Michigan, the Library of Congress, and the American Antiquarian Society. We also locate a copy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. OCLC 945091419, 960426982, 950902295. Lightly tanned, some staining to margins, not touching image. About very good.

A curious collection of cartes de visite depicting many of the most famous and popular sideshow acts of the late-19th century, including the original "Siamese twins" Chang and Eng Bunker, formerly enslaved conjoined singers Millie and Christine McKoy, P.T. Barnum's relentlessly promoted little people Tom Thumb, Commodore Nutt, and Minnie Warren, bearded women Delina Rose and Viola Myers, the Wild Men of Borneo "Waino and Plutanor" (i.e. Hiram and Barney Davis), and others. The album itself is contemporary but clearly repurposed, with old pencil captions referring to other 19th-century notables such as Gioachino Rossini and Edgar Allen Poe. A few of these images may be original to the album, as some of the earlier captions include Barnum himself, Millie and Christine, Chang and Eng, and others. A later owner, perhaps the compiler of the present collection, has captioned the versos of several portraits, identifying sitters and some details of their lives into the early 20th century. The images here were taken and distributed by a number of different photographers (including Matthew Brady), though the most well represented is Charles Eisenmann. Eisenmann (18551927) was among the most active photographers of circus, sideshow, and entertainment figures of his generation. His studio at No. 229 Bowery offered "Extra Inducements to the Theatrical Profession," a trade that benefitted from his close proximity to a number of sideshows and dime museums, including Barnum's New York Museum. The images in this album, in the order they appear, are as follows: 1. [Unidentified and uncredited photograph of two well-dressed young children]. 2. [Image of Chang and Eng Bunker later in life, with their two children]. S. Masury, Boston. 3. "The Fairy Wedding Group." Verso: "Published by E. & H.T. Anthony from photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait gallery." Depicts the 1863 wedding of Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren, with lithographed signatures of the subjects verso. 4. [Uncaptioned image of Commodore Nutt and Minnie Warren from the wedding party]. E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., New York. With the subjects' lithographed signatures verso. 5. [Uncaptioned image of Charles Stratton (Tom Thumb) and wife Lavinia Warren Stratton at their wedding]. E. & H.T. Anthony & Co., New York. With the subjects' lithographed signatures verso. 6. "Charles and Eliza Nestel, From Fort Wayne, Ind., known as Commodore Foote and Sister[bottom trimmed]." No publisher. 7. [Uncaptioned image of Commodore Nutt]. Charles D. Fredricks & Co., New York. 8. "Mr. Charles Decker, 19 years oldHeight, 31 InchesWeight, 45 lbs." No publisher. 9. "Miss Sophie Schulz, Age 17 years, Height 30 inches, Weigth [sic] 125 pounds." Chas. Eisenmann, New York. 10. [Uncaptioned image of "Fat Man" Frank Williams of Baltimore, MD]. No publisher. 11. "Hugh Murphy, The Irish Giant, Height over 8 feet Age 17 years." Chas. Eisenmann, New York. Verso advertises "Extra Inducements to the Theatrical Profession." 12. [Uncaptioned image of Waino and Plutanor, the "Wild Men of Borneo"]. Chas Eisenman [sic], New York. 13. "Waino and Plutano [sic], Weight 45 Pounds. Age 50 to 60." Chas. Eisenmann, New York. Waino and Plutanor, the so-called middle-aged "Wild Men of Borneo," were in fact American teenagers Hiram and Barney Davis, who performed impressive feats of strength for their relatively small stature. 14. [Uncaptioned image of two unidentified Black women with microcephaly]. Cesar Mitkiewicz & Co. Photographers, Brussels. 15. [Uncaptioned image of an unidentified Black couple with microcephaly in wedding attire]. London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company, "Sole photographers to the International Exhibition 1862." 16. [Another image of the same subjects]. London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company. 17. [Another image of the same subjects, in different attire]. London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company. 18. [Uncaptioned image of two unidentified individuals with microcephaly]. C.D. Fredricks & Co., New York. 19. "The Original Eliophobus Family. Rudolph Lucasie, Wife and Son. From the Island of Madagascar. Prominent Pecularities [sic]. White Silken Hair. Alabaster Complexion. Eyes Pink. Pupils Angular, nearly square" [printed text from verso]. Chas. Eisenmann, New York. 20. "Millie Christine." Permanent Photograph, Brown, Barnes & Bell, [London]. 21. [Uncaptioned image of "bearded lady" Viola Myers and husband Amos]. D.J. Wilkes, Photographer, Baltimore. 22. [Uncaptioned image of "bearded lady" Delina Rose]. Wykes' Gallery of Art, Grand Rapids, MI. 23. [Younger image of Millie and Christine McKoy posed next to a guitar]. W. L. Germon, Philadelphia. 24. [Uncaptioned image of Phineas T. Barnum]. J. Curney & Son, [New York]. 25. [Uncaptioned image of Chang and Eng Bunker and their two sons, earlier than #2]. No publisher. 26. [Uncaptioned image of Delina Rose, seated]. D.B. Spooner & Co., Springfield, MA. 27. [Later uncaptioned image of Viola and Amos Myers]. Bogardus, New York [after photo by Charles Eisenmann]. 28. "Millie Christine, The Two Headed Nightingale. Born 1851. Age 31 Years." Ollivier & Co., New York. A unique collection of images portraying unique individuals. Red patterned leather album with brass and bone fixtures, brass clasp, a.e.g. Rubbing to extremities of binding and leaves. Images in generally excellent condition, occasionally trimmed close or lightly stained and faded. Very good.

Notiz. Geb. Nat. Heilk. (1), 25/ 21. - Hrsg. v. Ludwig Friedrich Froriep. - Weimar, Landes-Industrie-Comptoir, October 1829, 4°, Sp.320-336, feine Broschur. (Dec. 1829, 26/ 9, Sp.129-132). S.Mitchell & W.Anderson aus New York schreiben Fogendes an Captain Coffin (Dec. 1829, 26/ 9, Sp.132-133).
