Recounts the revivals under his ministry, "The total number added to the church under my ministry of 25 years is 2,290!.Every successive year we were visited with revival seasons, and later numbers who had received the blessing were added to our own and to the neighboring churches."We have received the early and the latter rain, and have enjoyed precious revival seasons. There have been added to this church since its organization, 1456; five hundred on profession of their faith in Christ. The largest number added in any given year is 280, subjects, for the most part, of the great revival in 1858."Samuel Dickerson Burchard (1812-1891), Presbyterian minister, b. Steuben, NY. In addition to his labors as a pastor, Rev. Burchard served as the chancellor of Ingham University and as President of Rutgers Female College.

The spine has the date 1847 as part of the decoration, so the book appears to have been sold in successive years in differently dated bindings. Small 8vo, all edges gilt. Ten plates, in addition there is an extra frontispiece with a hand-colored engraving, a portrait of a gentleman, presumably the editor, surrounded by a wreath. Laid into the book is a folk-art bookmark, a cutout hand constructed from two sheets of paper, the hand of plain paper and a cuff on lined paper, the two held together with a pin. Condition near very good, joints rubbed, spine rubbed and with a small tear at top, some foxing, especially of the plate guards. Small pencil ownership inscription dated 1847 at Greenfield, Massachusetts on front blank. Contributions by Horace Greeley, Lydia H. Sigourney, Fanny "Forester," and numerous others whose names we do not recognize. Variety of contributions, one on a trip to Niagara Falls in 1838. Includes a translation of a story by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. The editor was pastor of the Houston St. Church, New York City. From a Vermont family library with a number of unusually well preserved nineteenth- and early twentieth-century books. Search on the keyword "Victorian" for other titles.

Circa 1855-1860 (based on the publisher's address on the title page); Leavitt & Allen; New York. The book features six full-page engravings, and a presentation page in color. Nicely bound in full leather with intricate gilt decorations on the covers and spine. Gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. The book belongs to a genre popular in the Victorian era known as "annuals" or "gift books." These were often elegantly bound volumes intended to be given as holiday presents. Contents include moralistic poetry, short stories, and essays. These books were meant to be decorative centerpieces for a parlor table and provided wholesome reading material suitable for the holiday season. Condition: A strip of the leather has chipped away along the bottom edge of the spine. Tears to the leather at the cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Bright gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Nice interior - the text pages are mostly clean with only soome very light foxing to the title page, the frontispiece, the color presentation page, and the tissue guard in between. The two Contents pages each have some light smudges at the lower-outer corners. Embossed bookseller's stamp at the top-right corner of the front end paper. Overall the book is in Good condition .
