The image itself is clear and sharp, in spotted and grubby margins. Docketed in pencil on reverse 'Monkish Robes | 491 | to 5 inches width | with rule as in picture'. An attractive, detailed watercolour, in black and grey, and picked out in white, showing three monks processing with eyes cast to the ground in different directions in the grounds of stone temple overgrown with foliage. One monk advances towards the viewer, while another ascends stone steps with carvings of the Buddha at the base of each handrail. Twidle was a prolific book and magazine illustrator, and it is not clear where the illustration was printed. It does not feature in the most likely title, 'Through Eastern Windows' (RTS, 1919).

Post World War II, Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of India, overseeing the transition to independence for India and Pakistan. His later career included serving as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Defense Staff. Lightly rubbed and marked. With later bookplate 'From the Library of the Earl of Avon', i.e., Sir Anthony Eden, loosely inserted. Presentation copy, inked inscription to verso of upper wrapper: 'To Anthony, in memory of his very gallant son from Dickie'. A poignant and significant presentation copy of the definitive HMSO report of the Burma campaign during the Second World War, inscribed by the author, Louis Mountbatten, first Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900-1979), whom Churchill had appointed as Supreme Allied Commander South East Asia Command (SEAC) in the summer of 1943; to then Foreign Secretary Sir Anthony Eden, whose eldest son, Simon Gascoigne Eden - a navigator with the 62nd Squadron RAF VR - had been serving in Burma when his plane went missing in June 1945. His death was confirmed the following month, just before the 1945 General Election. From the library of Sir Anthony Eden (1897-1977), Lord Avon, British foreign secretary (1935-38, 1940-45, and 1951-55) and Prime Minister (1955-1957). Following active service in the First World War, Eden read Oriental languages at Oxford. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1923. In 1935 he was appointed foreign secretary, a position he resigned in 1938 to protest Prime Minister Neville Chamberlainâs appeasement of Nazi Germany. When Churchill became Prime Minister in 1940, he was named secretary of state for war, and later during the Second World War once more served as foreign secretary. Eden succeeded Churchill as Prime Minister in 1955. In 1956, his failure to respond effectively during the Suez Crisis, and the subsequent loss of party and public support, ultimately led to his resignation from office in 1957. He was knighted in 1954 and created earl of Avon in 1961. Size: Quarto.

Anything I could say would fall short of what I feel - so to Peter Murphy, from Minou, 20 Dec 48, 603 Park Avenue". Mountbatten and Peter Murphy (1897-1966) became friends as students at Cambridge University after the First World War and remained close throughout their lives. During the Second World War, Murphy served on Mountbatten's staff when the latter was Supreme Commander, South East Asia Command. Murphy's left-wing views prompted accusations from some military officers that he was a Communist spy - resulting in a 1952 security service investigation - and his homosexuality fuelled rumours that the two men may have had a romantic relationship. Murphy played a major role in drafting and editing Mountbatten's books and speeches, for which he received little public credit. Ray Murphy - no relation to Peter - was an American journalist living at 603 Park Avenue in New York. Last Viceroy is the first biography of Mountbatten, and presents a sympathetic yet candid account; he was given privileged access to official records. Peter is referenced only once in the book, as meeting Ray ahead of Ray seeing Mountbatten at his headquarters in Singapore. However this inscription, and the author signing as "Minou" (French for "kitty"), suggests a closer relationship. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Mounted to the pastedown is a typed letter signed from Mountbatten commenting on the uncredited work Peter Murphy undertook writing the report. The letter, dated 26 January 1951, reads, "My dear Peter, Here is your copy, my dear Marco, of the second great Marco production. I shall bask in the reflected glory of being nearly as great a master of English prose as the Duke of Wellington, and one of these days you will be able to dine out on being the greatest living expert on polo and the higher direction of war. I have never really thanked you for all the tremendous hard work you did on this book, but I think you realise how eternally grateful I am without my writing and saying so. Yours ever, Dickie". Mountbatten and Peter Murphy (1897-1966) became friends as students at Cambridge University after the First World War and remained close throughout their lives. Murphy took an extensive role in drafting and editing Mountbatten's books and speeches, for which he received very little public credit. Mountbatten's "Marcopiece" inscription and comments on his Polo expertise is in reference to how his first book, An Introduction to Polo (1931), was published under the "Marco" pseudonym - Murphy had also been closely involved with writing that book. Mountbatten's report covers his actions as one of the key commanders of the Second World War, during which Murphy served on his staff. It was first printed for internal use only in Delhi in 1947, while he was serving as the final Viceroy of India. It was issued here for the public with the redaction of sensitive information (the redacted part was eventually published in 1969). The ordinary issue was in wrappers. Loosely inserted are five photographs of Murphy with the Mountbattens, and a copy of The Strategy of the South-East Asia Campaign, Mountbatten's lecture to the Royal United Service Institution on 9 October 1946. Mountbatten and Peter Murphy (1897-1966) became friends as students at Cambridge University after the First World War and remained close throughout their lives. "Murphy was probably Mountbatten's closest confidant, a talented man of great charm and left-wing views. Murphy played a major role in drafting and editing Mountbatten's books and speeches, for which he received little public credit. Add to basketFirst and sole edition, with a tipped-in photograph of the plane signed by Mountbatten in green ink. This report details the inspection, modification, and flight tests of Mountbatten's VIP aircraft while he was Supreme Allied Commander, South East Asia Command (SEAC). We have traced no other copies. "Realizing that the post-war aircraft market would be dominated by American designs, (and in contravention of the Anglo-American agreement that all transport aircraft would be made in the United States), in 1941, Avro designer Roy Chadwick began to sketch out a long-range, four-engined transport based on the Lancaster bomber. His design married the wings, tail assembly, engines, and landing gear of the bomber to a square fuselage. The prototype Avro Type 685 flew on July 5, 1942, and production of the York (as it was called) began in 1943" (Pigott, p. 152). The Avro York became the VIP aircraft of choice for Winston Churchill, the Duke of Gloucester, Jan Smuts, and Lord Mountbatten. Mountbatten's York was captained by Squadron Leader Jack Matthews, alongside navigator Flight Lieutenant Reggie Wainwright and engineering officer Flight Lieutenant E. Maxwell. This report, produced by Matthews, details the maintenance and modifications that were required to make her a diplomatic aircraft. These included the installation of additional fuel tanks, extra luggage storage, and the provision of desks and VIP chairs. The report also contains the minutes of classified meetings on the York's fuel capacity, the results of a 68,000-pound overload takeoff test, and official copies of the flight analyses and engineer's log sheets from 17 test flights carried out between 22 August and 24 September 1944. Peter Pigott, Royal Transport: An Inside Look at the History of Royal Travel, 2005. Folio. Original buff paper wrappers, front wrapper lettered in black and decorated with vignette in blue, leaves hole-punched and fastened with treasury tags. The inscription is countersigned by four members of the magazine's staff, including Kong Yulin (secretary), Pang Yow Chee (manager), Chan Kai (photographer), and Lum Sien Yuen (general assistant). Immediately following the Second World War, Edwina Mountbatten established the Welfare Council for Malaya. In 1952, she toured south-east Asia and, following her return to the UK, called for St John Ambulance to send medical teams to provide aid to Malaya's "new villages" (resettlement camps). Her work, as with this periodical, reflected British beliefs that humanitarianism and education could be an effective tool of counterinsurgency. Quarto (305 x 215 mm). Illustrations in text; some mastheads printed in colour. Original blue buckram, spine lettered in black, front cover lettered in black within recessed panel, binder's ticket of Caxton Press, Kuala Lumpur, on front pastedown. Cloth sunned, some leaves browned, otherwise general toning internally: very good.
