About the book >.>.> This book is the 'last hurrah!' of Dillon Ripley's long and distinguished ornithological career. Although he worked on ornithological issues that spanned the globe, Dillon Ripley's first love, no doubt, was South Asia, and his long friendship and collaboration with Salim Ali ce-mented that commitment to India and its neighboring regions. Ripley's first visit to the Subcontinent was made with his sister in the 1920s, in the days of British India. He continued to visit for sixty years, and South Asia remained in his heart, I am certain, to his last day. It is sad that Mr. Ripley did not live to see the publi-cation of this volume. He was much intrigued by its possibilities. I can clearly recall first discussing the con-cept for this book, intended to be the next 'big project' of his ever-productive research laboratory situated in the National Museum of Natural History across the mall from his administrative office in the Smithsonian's Cas-tle. At that time, there was some question about what sort of book we should un.

The titles excise and customs, poor, and taxes, are by j. Chitty. The rest of the work is by thomas chitty of the inner temple. The chittys, who were father and son, were english lawyers and between them authored some of the earliest practitioners' texts and played a significant role in documenting the legal reforms of the nineteenth century. These volumes cover the legality of seemingly every aspect of life, outlining the law on everything from oysters and tea to hawking and the post office.
