As Cassandra Tate pointed out in her history-correcting Unsettled Ground: The Whitman Massacre and Its Shifting Legacy in the American West, Penrose gave rise to the Whitman-Saved-Oregon myth, using purported martyrdom as a fundraising tool for Whitman College, of which he was president.Mrs. Bowden is Angie Elizabeth Burt Bowden (1862-1952), author of Early Schools of Washington Territory and a pioneer herself, having lived in Walla Walla from 1866 - 1882. Penrose to ostensibly commemorate the 75th anniversary of the 1847 Whitman Massacre, the pageant operated as a highly romanticized lesson in "Americanism" and a shrewd college fundraising tool.
