Paperback. Condition: Near Fine. Velocette never really did "ordinary." While other manufacturers chased bigger sales, louder advertising and ever-larger production numbers, Velocette quietly carried on building motorcycles with the sort of engineering sophistication that suggested someone in Birmingham had mistaken a motorcycle factory for a laboratory. The result was a range of machines that earned fierce loyalty from riders, bewilderment from accountants, and a permanent place in British motorcycling history. Velocette Motorcycles ? MSS to Thruxton by Rod Burris is a splendid tribute to one of Britain?s most respected marques, concentrating on the later singles and twins that carried the Velocette name through the post-war years. Published by Veloce Publishing in 2004, this well-researched volume charts the development of machines ranging from the dependable MSS to the legendary Thruxton, examining their engineering, production history, racing pedigree and enduring appeal among collectors. Richly illustrated with period photographs and detailed examples, it?s exactly the sort of book that encourages the innocent browser to spend "just five minutes" reading, only to emerge two hours later wondering whether they have room in the garage for another motorcycle. Rod Burris clearly understands that Velocettes occupy a rather special corner of the classic bike world. They weren?t built to be fashionable, and they certainly weren?t designed for people who regarded maintenance as somebody else?s problem. These motorcycles rewarded mechanical sympathy, regular fettling and an appreciation for beautifully executed engineering. In return, they delivered a riding experience that enthusiasts still speak about with the kind of reverence usually reserved for vintage wine or particularly good pubs. The famous Thruxton, of course, has become something of a legend. Winning races has a habit of improving a motorcycle?s reputation, but Velocette somehow managed to combine competition success with an almost stubborn refusal to become mainstream. It?s rather admirable, really. While the rest of the industry was busy chasing mass production, Velocette seemed content to produce motorcycles for people who valued craftsmanship over convenience and precision over popularity. This copy is in Near Fine condition, which means it has aged rather more gracefully than many of the motorcycles featured inside. The pages remain clean, the binding is tight, and there is little to distract from Burris?s engaging narrative and the wealth of photographs. It looks ready for many more evenings spent beside an armchair, a workshop bench or perhaps a half-finished restoration project that has already exceeded both its budget and its owner?s original timetable. Like every volume sold by Crappy Old Books , this isn?t merely a used book changing hands; it?s another piece of motoring history continuing its journey. Someone else has already enjoyed its pages, perhaps while planning a restoration, reminiscing about a long-sold machine, or convincing themselves that buying "just one more classic bike" was an entirely sensible financial decision. After all, Velocette motorcycles have always appealed to a certain kind of enthusiast. The sort who smiles at exposed valve gear, appreciates elegant engineering solutions, and regards the occasional afternoon spent adjusting tappets not as a chore but as quality time. This book understands those people perfectly. It also quietly reminds the rest of us that while perfection is all very well, character is infinitely more interesting?and few motorcycles possessed more character than a Velocette.…
