Title page printed in red and black, with the large engraved device of the Jesuits ("IHS") and the motto "LAUDABILE NOMEN DOMINI" from Psalm 113:3 ("the name of the Lord is to be praised"); printer's device on colophon. The first printed edition of this compilation of biographies on the lives of the popes, beginning with Saint Peter. Manuscript versions, known as the Liber Pontificalis, were first produced in the fifth or sixth century and some have been attributed to the papal librarian Anastasius bibliothecarius (though there are differing views that ascribe parts of the work to, i.a., Saint Jerome, and from there the author attribution trail gets rather complicated). This edition rare, with only one copy recorded in WorldCat (at the BSB in Munich). A good copy, with some early notations on front flyleaf and title page (with a few small remnants of paper tape covering ink notations); pages partially browned but in otherwise clean, very good condition; covers worn; front board detached; loss of about an inch at the top of backstrip.

L'auteur étudie ainsi 83 vices et 75 vertus, pour chacune d'entre elles, il ajoute un remède selon la Bible. A l'origine le Panarion recensait les hérésies connues et répertoriées. Upper spine restored, as well as spine-ends. Brown stain to second board, 1cm in diameter. Leaf 553, a hole to the lower margin, a few pale traces of foxing, some rubbed spots. A very fine copy in an elaborately decorated early 17th-century Italian armorial morocco binding with the arms of the Duke of Magenta, Alfonso Brentano. The Panarion is a curious encyclopedia of mental illnesses viewed as immoral behavior and classified according to biblical vices and virtues.
