Seller: Between the Covers-Rare Books, Inc. ABAA, Gloucester City, NJ, U.S.A.
Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. A small collection of material pertaining to O. Roy Busch (1886 - 1944), one of only two African American doctors practicing in Oakland and Berkeley by the late 1930s, and who appears to have handled maternity-related care for local African American women. Includes: *The Physician's Perfect Call List and Record* (Detroit: The Swift Publishing Co, [1926]). Fortieth Edition. Measuring 6½" x 4". Black pebbled cloth with gilt stamped title and gilt stamped ownership name (misspelled Roy O. Busch). [168]pp., of which approx. 20 have been used, all dated 1943-44 and entirely notes about personal expenses rather than patient information. [With] Two black and white photographs of Busch: portrait photograph, measuring 5½" x 3½", tipped onto an 11" x 7" stiff card backing and housed inside a gray paper portfolio, inscription in pencil on verso: "M Rosa From Brs Roy Busch Ann Arbor Mich"; and Real Photo Postcard of Busch seated in a car with initials painted on the car ("O.R.B") and Inscribed: "Yours truly O. Roy Busch." Overall near fine with light edgewear to both photos and spine tear, small chip and a couple tiny stains to the portfolio; the book is like new. Busch was born in California, Missouri, educated at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and served as resident physician of City General hospital in Kansas City. He later served at a hospital in Dallas, Texas, where he attended the fatal shooting of Black newspaper publisher William Elisha King (*Dallas Express*), before setting up practice in Oakland in 1919 with his wife Georgia. By 1931 he was elected as the state president of the National Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association, an African American organization. An interesting collection from an early African-American physician.
