Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. German Jesuit theologian and master of casuistry, Hermann Busenbaum (1600-1668) taught theology in Cologne and directed the Jesuit colleges of Hildesheim and Münster. His main work, Medulla theologiae moralis (1645), offered a synthesis of cases of conscience, and became a reference manual in Catholic seminaries for 2 centuries. Well received by the Church, it was praised by theologians such as St. Alphonsus de Liguori. Claude Lacroix, French Jesuit moral theologian, taught at Cologne and Münster. He published with his life work "Theologia Moralis" (first edition in 8 vols, Cologne 1707-1714) a commentary on and extension of the standard classic textbook "Medulla theologiae moralis" by Hermann Busenbaum. Lacroix's controversial additions on murder, and in particular regicide, led to its condemnation by the Paris Parliament; the book was even burnt in Toulouse in 1757, contributing to the attacks on the Jesuits. It went through 25 editions in 50 years and won for Lacroix the reputation of being one of the finest moralists of his age (in spite of the fact that he was criticized for making an abuse of casuistry). One of the later editions of this works served as a focal point of the opposition of the Jansenists to the Jesuits and was condamned by the parliament of Paris and publicly burnt in Toulouse. Early edition of this standard work, first printed in Italy. Pezzano imprint with printer's device on title page. FORN-SHELF-0479-PP-2601-HK3144.
