Dust-jackets: moderate scuffing, scuffed edges, small tears on edges. Cloth bound boards minimally scuffed. Gilt lettering and deco on boards and spine. Outer edge of text blocks contains some age-staining. Head and tail of spines bumped. Text block contains some age-staining. Bindings tight and intact. Please see photos. Herbert Cram (Publisher) was the son of German emigrants in the USA, but received his education in Germany, attending the Realschule (a type of secondary school) in Hildesheim and the Leibniz School in Hanover, where he graduated in 1910. From 1911, he studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Charlottenburg, but had to interrupt his studies from 1914 to the end of 1918 due to his participation in the First World War. In 1920, he earned his degree in engineering and worked as a research assistant at the Technical University of Charlottenburg. In January 1919, he married Clara de Gruyter (1891-1984), the daughter of the publisher Walter de Gruyter, whom he had met in 1913. After the unexpected death of his father-in-law in 1923, he was groomed to succeed him in the management of the publishing house Walter de Gruyter & Co. He resigned his position at the Technical University of Charlottenburg and began an apprenticeship as a bookseller at the publishing house on October 1, 1923. In 1925, he became a personally liable partner in the publishing house. In 1937, he acquired the Moritz Krayn Technical Publishing House, which subsequently operated as the Herbert Cram Technical Publishing House. FORN-SHELF-0586-BB-2605-EF304.
