Published by Taranaki Herald, New Plymouth, 1942
Seller: BOPBooks, Tauranga, BOP, New Zealand
Soft Covers. Condition: USED_GOOD. No Jacket. Photos, Art (illustrator). 1st. Fred Butler had an established reputation as a local historion when his " Early Days, Taranaki" was published as, to some extent, it was based around his series of historical newspaper articles. In his preface, however he refers to an early chapter covering "for the first time a complete record of the Maori feuds of the 20 years till 1860." Early Days. " has 20 chapters encompassing all aspects of the initial settlement and its settlers and the difficulties faced by those first 140 emigrants who arrived (March 1841} to find that little had been done ashore to prepare accommodation for them. He then follows the gradual developmernt of a community and its social and civic amenities --- in many aspects a picture typical of the establishment of early NZ communities, There much about the interaction of the new settlers with the Maori of the district. A feature of Butler's book is the quality of its illustratuions, particularly those of early artists who depict conditions for the first landing of settlers and a double page spread of straggling New Plymouth in 1855, with another, a year later, showing a more established settlement. Additional b/w photos or art show general views or portraits of notable personalities. The author presents an excellent account of the experiences of early setters on reaching NZ's shores. First edition of 1942 from a print run of 500 copies, 127 pages including unpaginated index, stiff card covers are paper covered with the front board speckled with foxing spots, dark brown front titles, spine titles laid on a paper strip with ragged edges, while the paper covering on the rear board has been stripped over a narrow band adjacent the rear spine hinge, the text block remains frim in the covers with no gutter separation, the FFEP has the name of a former own inked out with 1942 below, a corrections note tipped in on the contents page which is loose but attached, otherwise the text block is basically tight and clean. However, one illustration "Bell Block Stockade" (page 109) has be cleanly cut from the text block. In doing this the preceding sheet [pages107/108] was also cut out, but is present though loose. Tragic treatment for scarce book, which is priced accordingly.
