Original full calf boards worn and refurbished, re-backed spine with six raised bands forming seven compartments, ruled gilt, with gilt-lettered red morocco lettering-piece in second compartment First edition of Chippendale's groundbreaking furniture pattern-book with all 161 exquisite engravings, the most important book of furniture designs in eighteenth-century England. "The Director ushered in a new era in furniture design and forever changed the way furniture designs evolved and were disseminated." [Greene] The Director is a furniture pattern-book that contains 161 engraved plates after designs by Chippendale of furniture in the Gothic, Chinoiserie, English, and French Rococo styles. It was intended to act as a trade catalog for Chippendale's cabinet making firm, which he started in London in 1748. This landmark large folio of Chippendale's had a great impact on American aesthetics, particularly in Philadelphia where several copies were known to have been in the 1760s. "Chippendale's richly carved style had a pervasive influence on local cabinetmaking." [Heilbrunn] His text was extensively relied upon by furniture-makers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; the present copy bears authentic witness to this use with contemporary annotations from a craftsman at work, as well as fingerspots of varnish on the leaves and a workaday binding. The object's historicity perfectly portrays the trade as it was at the time. Chippendale states in the preface that his intention behind The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director was to assist the one (the Gentleman) in the choice, and the other in the execution of the designs. The term "Chippendale" is often used to describe English Rococo furniture inspired by The Director's illustrated designs. Published by subscription, the book was an immense success and led to wide dispersal of his work. "His designs were plagiarized from at least the early Victorian period by the publisher John Weale, and more or less free adaptations from The Director have been a staple product of commercial furniture makers since the mid-nineteenth century." [ODNB] The publication's reputation helped Chippendale's firm attract many fashionable clients, including the English actor and playwright David Garrick. Two more editions appeared in Chippendale's lifetime: a virtually identical second edition in 1755, and a revised third edition published in installments from 1759-1762. This complete example of the first edition is as issued, with Page 21 numbered 20. The plates are numbered I-CLX in alternating Roman and Arabic numerals, with two of the plates numbered XXV, the first of which is "Chinese Chairs," the second is "Chinese Sopha," as called for. Full-Leather. Condition: Good. No dj. First Edition. Rebound in plain dark brown leather in puritanical style of the period, with original leather of front and rear boards laid on. The text is sound and tight, some chipping at edges of the original endpapers has been built up with archive grade materials, the text leaves only ha…ve some rounding of the corners. The text block edges are strongly age darkened with general ink splashes, some of which have penetrated the paper area by about 1mm. Inside the text is reasonably clean, with of course the occasional smudge and ink splash from these long ago times. Textually complete, three rear blank flyleaves are lighter in tone though appear from other clues to be original, hence all original leaves appear to be present in good order. The paper is supple ,and only moderately age tanned, mainly near the edges. A scarce and important work which has already received the high quality binding restoration it deserves. This is the 1677 first edition of Miège's "A NEW DICTIONARY French and English, With Another English and French; According to the Present USE, and Modern ORTHOGRAPHY of the FRENCH. INRICH'D With New WORDS, Choice PHRASES, and Apposite PROVERBS; DIGESTED Into a most Accurate METHOD; And CONTRIVED For the USE both of English and Foreiners." Following the dictionaries of Randle Cotgrave, Miège took a different approach, producing this independent work, with no other material added. By the time of the Restoration Miège had emigrated from Switzerland to England and published three French and English dictionaries (1677, 1679, and 1688) in that pair of languages. The front matter of this1677 dictionary contains a title page, a dedication, and a preface. On the title page, Miège explains that he has followed the updated spelling of the French Academy and added new words, phrases, and proverbs. This content is arranged in a methodical way "For the Use both of English and Foreiners". The word "Chansselle" has been neatly added in period hand. The second text is the dedication to Charles Lennox (1672-1723), son of Charles II of England, to whom Miège presents his "Racourci de deux Langues Vulgaires, le Francois & .Anglois." There are a few markings to the endpapers, no other inscriptions we can see apart from that name on the title page. Unpaginated, the work is 8"x9-3/4"x2-1/2". Size: 4to.

The recipient of the present letter is not named, but it is the scientific bookseller and publisher John Nourse (1705-1780), who the following year would published the 'Lectures' referred to in the letter: 'An Introduction to Physiology, being A Course of Lectures upon The most important Parts of the Animal Oeconomy', 'Printed f…or J. Nourse at the Lamb opposite Katherine-Street in the Strand. [1759]' An interesting letter, giving insight into the relationship between an eighteenth-century provincial medical author and his London publisher, with Flemyng instructing Nourse to procure books for his friends, commenting on work in hand, and asking how to receive news of a medical discovery. 3pp, 4to. Bifolium. Aged and worn, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf, which carries an endorsement. Forty-two lines of text, addressed to an unnamed recipient. The letter begins: 'Sir | I wrote several weeks ago desiring you amongst other things to send for Mr Scholy an Apothecary herr Heister's surgery and [?] diseases of the Eyes; But as no parcel is come yet, we imagined through some mistake or other my Letter may have been misplaced. I likewise desire you to take that opportunity of sending in the same parcel Dr Monro's treatise on the Lymphatic for myself. The whole to be directed for me to the care of Mr Fore post-master of Brigg [where Flemyng resided]'. Should the recipient have any 'scrupull about sending Mr Scholeys Books without ready money, please signify it to me and he will write to his Druggist or some other friend to wait upon you for that purpose; and moreover I am desired by Mr Scholy to acquaint you that if the parcel is not yet sent off you will send, for him, along with the rest Brown's Translation of Gregory's Optics.' Turning to his 'Introduction to Physiology' Flemyng writes: 'As I wrote you in my last I shall be as good as my word in having my Lectures completed by the first of June, or perhaps a week or two later at most. Pray what is the safest and best way of transmitting the Parcel so as come safe? [last four words deleted] I shall be directed by you after you have considered the bulk of the work what sort of preface to make, or whether some account of the Contents by way of Index should be added, & whether it should be long or short'. Regarding the celebrated anatomist William Hunter (1718-1783) he continues: 'I hear of some Discovery Dr Hunter teacher of Anatomy has made concerning the Nerves, pray how can I be informed about it.' He ends in the hope that he will hear from him soon. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
