Black text with black border. Top center vignette of allegorical figures with trident-wielding Poseidon. Embossed seal at center left with imprint of engraver Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson at bottom center. Originally comprised of 42 coupons (outright missing July 1864, January 1865, and July 1865); majority of 37 present with losses to 2 others which are redeemable from January 1866 to January 1885. Formally established in 1828 as a successor to the Potowmack Co., the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company operated its canal from 1831 to 1924 between the Potomac's north branch in Cumberland, Maryland and the river's final geographic fall line at the Washington, DC neighborhood of Georgetown.
