Paperback. Condition: New. As the first volume in the new series Art and, this book signals a bold new vision for a more dynamic study of art Each essay in this groundbreaking volume-the first in an exciting new series from the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts-engages aesthetic and cultural debates that situate research on the arts at the intersection of various disciplines, including architecture, film, literature, curatorial and museum studies, and the arts of performance. Reflecting the series' goal to engage with different cultural contexts and time periods, newly commissioned essays from emerging and established scholars address subjects ranging from medieval dance and ancient Assyrian reliefs to expressions of gender embodiment and the art of the Afro-Atlantic. First-person narratives ground theoretical considerations of the theme. Reflecting a commitment to embracing the book form as a space for art itself, Art and Histories includes a detachable accordion-fold insert with a work from Miami-based artist Glexis Novoa. One of his signature horizon lines unites Washington, DC, and the artist's native Havana. Meticulous drawings executed on travertine marble entangle the two cities and their monuments, symbolizing both violent and triumphant histories and their ideological reversals. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** "On October 27, 1960, art critic Pierre Restany named a group of Paris-based artists the 'Nouveaux Realistes' (New Realists) in a founding declaration that stated, 'The New Realists recognize their collective singularity. New Realism = new perceptual approaches of the real.'. Besides Restany, this group included Arman, Francois Dufrene, Raymond Hains, Yves Klein, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, and Jacques Villegle. Their work incorporated consumer objects and new media in response to the postwar period's painterly modes and its burgeoning consumer and industrial society. However, they did not share a common avant-garde strategy. The Myth of Nouveau Realismeis a critical reassessment of this important neo-avant-garde movement. Kaira M. Cabanas offers an interdisciplinary account of their work and challenges the ideas of Restany, who mandated a 'direct appropriation of the real.' Cabanas posits that, for the Nouveau Realistes, realism engaged performative practices to produce alternative social meanings." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: The direct appropriation of the real; Let this be said and done; Archeological abductions; How real is realism in actuality?; Screen performances. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Brathwaite's stones, flowers and feminine "soft bodies" encounter Fernandez's representations of masculinity and veiled homoeroticism in bullfightingA double monograph celebrating the South American sculptors Valerie Brathwaite (born 1940) and Jose Gabriel Fernandez (born 1957), Vital and Veiled brings together a selection of the most emblematic series by both artists. Brathwaite's work is imbued with a vitalism that is reflected in her choice of forms and materials, contributing in a provocative way to contemporary debates on new materialisms, from her perspective as a Black Caribbean woman. Meanwhile, Fernandez's bullfighting-inspired sculptures combine a refined aesthetic sophistication with veiled references to sexuality, contributing to the expansion of queer art narratives. Paperback. Condition: New. One of the most important avant-garde movements of postwar Paris was Lettrism, which crucially built an interest in the relationship between writing and image into projects in poetry, painting, and especially cinema. Highly influential, the Lettrists served as a bridge of sorts between the earlier works of the Dadaists and Surrealists and the later Conceptual artists. Off-Screen Cinema is the first monograph in English on the Lettrists. Offering a full portrait of the avant-garde scene of 1950s Paris, it focuses on the film works of key Lettrist figures like Gil J Wolman, Maurice Lemaitre, Francois Dufrene, and especially the movement's founder, Isidore Isou, a Romanian immigrant whose "discrepant editing" deliberately uncoupled image and sound. Through Cabanas' history, we see not only the full scope of the Lettrist project, but also its clear influence on Situationism, the French New Wave, and the New Realists, as well as American filmmakers such as Stan Brakhage.
