Este volumen contiene las doscientas fotografías que componen la serie Laocoonte salvaje, obra del artista e historiador de la fotografía Jorge Ribalta, así como una extensa conversación entre éste y los especialistas en flamenco Pedro G. Romero y Gerhard Steingress acerca de la iconografía y los modos de representación visual dominantes de la cultura flamenca: sus poéticas y sus políticas. Las fotografías de Ribalta son, amén de un trabajo singularísimo dentro del arte contemporáneo español, el desencadenante de un discurso que supera el concepto «trabajo de campo». Un repertorio de imágenes en blanco y negro que trata de poner al día, según el propio autor, «la geografía visual del flamenco, más allá de la sobre-codificación heredada de los iconos derivados de la gramática neorrealista y de un tipo de representación basada en la figura del intérprete en plena actuación, a menudo en entornos de ecos rurales (o pseudorurales) y ahistóricos». Imágenes en constelación destinadas a visibilizar la estructura del campo cultural flamenco a través de una selección de espacios y lugares, tanto históricos y emblemáticos como ignorados o marginales. La valiosa conversación que completa este «álbum-ensayo» (y que puede leerse de manera independiente) se acerca, revisa y aborda críticamente algunos de los tópicos, claves y logros del flamenco desde su nacimiento, con un talante que huye tanto de la apología acrítica como del victimismo grandilocuente. Urbanismo, economía, iconografía, movimientos sociales. . . son algunos de los elementos sobre los que se reflexiona (sin olvidar nunca el marco histórico: del presente o del pasado) a la vez que se producen sugerentes derivas que van más allá de la simple dicotomía interpretación-constatación. Jorge Ribalta es fotógrafo, historiador y comisario de exposiciones. Nació en Barcelona en 1963. Tras estudiar en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Barcelona completó sus estudios en Niza, donde obtuvo el Premio de la Jeune Création Européenne (Prix de la Villa Arson) Art Jonction 89, y Nueva York. En 1992 fue artista visitante de la Slade School of Art (University College) de Londres, y en 1996 de la School of the Art Institute de Chicago. Entre 1997 y 1998 participó en el International Studio Program de Nueva York. Ribalta dirigió entre 1999 y 2009 el Departamento de Programas Públicos del MACBA (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Barcelona), y ha editado varios libros de referencia: Indiferencia y singularidad. La fotografía en el pensamiento artístico contemporáneo (MACBA, Barcelona, 1997, 2ª ed. Gustavo Gili, Barcelona, 2003), Efecto real. Debates posmodernos sobre fotografía (Gustavo Gili, 2004) o Espacios fotográficos públicos. Exposiciones de propaganda, de Pressa a The Family of Man, 1928-1955 (MACBA, 2009).
