Stated First U.S. Edition. Dust jacket with a slightly sunned spine (bold & legible titles). *** "The life of Tina Modotti is the stuff of enduring legend. Her sensual, melancholic beauty inspired the work of the most brilliant artists, photographers, and writers of her time, including Diego Rivera, Edward Weston, and Pablo Neruda. Her fierce commitment to the social and political causes of the working class and her affiliation with the Mexican Communist Party landed her at the center of national controversy in Mexico. A gifted photographer in her own right, Modotti is now widely recognized as one of the great artists of the early twentieth century. It was through her work as a model that she met photographer Edward Weston. Though already married to California poet Roubaix de l'Abrie Richey (known as Robo), Modotti fell in love with Weston and with photography and left with him for Mexico in 1922. In Mexico Modotti blossomed, both as a talented artist and as a dedicated worker for the cause of the revolutionary left, and befriended artists Rivera and Frieda Kahlo. In 1929 Modotti, under suspicion by the Mexican police, was arrested in connection with the murder of Julio Antonio Mella, a Cuban revolutionary and her lover. Though the killers were never identified, the Mexican press raised a scandal by publishing nude photographs of Modotti taken by Weston. She was eventually exiled from Mexico. Denied re-entry to the United States, Modotti field to Germany and then to Moscow, where she abandoned her photography and worked as a bureaucrat for the Communist Party and traveled on clandestine missions for the 'Red Rescue.' In 1936 Modotti moved to Spain, where she met Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Andre Malraux, and Robert Capa. Although Capa tried to encourage her to take up her photography again, Modotti was by now dedicating herself exclusively to political militancy. At the fall of the Spanish Republic in 1939, Modotti returned to Mexico, where she died on January 5, 1942." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: The young revolutionary; Into the maze; Photography and militancy; Crossing borders; A kind of homecoming. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. We hoped to find both on the other side of the Mexican lines. This is the true story of John Riley and the other Irishmen who started off fighting for the United States during the Mexican American War of 1846. Ultimately, however, having fled famine and oppression in their European homeland, they could not stay silent at the brutality of US forces determined to expel Mexican citizens from disputed territory. Driven by their sense of justice, a group of these men deserted the US side and formed the legendary St. Patricks Battalion, an artillery unit fighting for Mexico. With epic storytelling and historical rigor, Pino Cacucci recounts the cruel fate of Riley and his men, who ultimately fought a losing battle and were court-martialed for high treason, branded on the cheek with the letter D for deserter. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Artista genuina, espiritu indomable, fervorosa militante: todo en la vida de Tina Modotti contribuyo a que se convirtiera en leyenda.Apasionada e impetuosa, la personalidad de Tina fue unica. Everything in Tina Modottis life contributed to her becoming a legend. Passionate and impetuous, Tina had a unique personality. Born in Italy at the end of the nineteenth century, and after a brief time in Hollywood where she worked as an actress, Tina arrived in Mexico right in the midst of the vibrant culture of the nineteen twenties. She joined in the artistic and political reflections of creators and intellectuals of the time: Edward Weston, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Frida Kahlo, to name a few. Here she would find the courage and the necessary inspiration to explore an ideal format to express her commitment and indignation in the face of social injusticephotography. But even stronger than her character and her work were her fervent anti-fascist ideals, which she firmly upheld until her tragic death, the cause of which remains a mystery.
