Set against the backdrop of a crumbling Ottoman Empire and the ambitions of European powers, the narrative depicts the intense negotiations that took place between the two leaders in their struggle for control over territories. The author delves into the historical and geopolitical context of the conflict, exploring the competing interests and motivations of the major players. Atabey verso front covers. First edition. This work is a sequel to Cadalvene's "Histoire de la Guerre de Méhmet-Ali", 1837. It is a continuation of Cadalvene's interest in Mehmet Ali. Cadalvene was a business man who spent several years in Egypt, from 1829 at least until 1834, as a representative of certain French business interests. After his campaign in Syria, Mehmet Ali was offered loans by a number of French banks, and Cadalvene, representing the Rothschilds, offered to lend him 100 million French francs. While waiting for Mehmet Ali to make a decision, Cadalvene travelled extensively in the region, gathering the material for his books. The first of these, "L'Égypte et La Nubie" (1836), is an account of a voyage up the Nile which he wrote with J. de Breuvery, who accompanied him on his travels. Later Cadalvene turned his attention to Mehmet Ali's aspirations in the Levant, and he wrote an accurate portrait of the ambitious Pasha of Egypt. Couverture rigide. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] First edition of this uncommon study of the major international diplomatic crisis provoked by Mehmed Ali's expansionist policy (cf. Carré I, 294; Blackmer 261; Atabey 179; Walch, 398; Hage Chahine, 748).Some foxing, occasional reading marks in pencil and red pencil in the margins of certain paragraphs.Late 19th-century Bradel bindings in half khaki percaline, flat spines decorated with a gilt fleuron, gilt double rules at foot of spines, black shagreen title-pieces, marbled paper boards, original wrappers preserved, corners rubbed. At the end of the first volume, the work is complete with the folding plate representing the Battle of Nezib.Edmond de Cadalvène (17991852) served as embassy attaché, then as director of the French postal service in Alexandria, Smyrna, and later Constantinople; his knowledge of the Orient, and particularly Egypt, was vast and multifaceted. As for the Saint-Simonian Émile Barrault (17991869), he followed a more conventional political path: he travelled to Egypt to accompany Father Enfantin in his quest for the Woman and universal regeneration. *.
