Add to basketFirst edition, second issue, presentation copy from a member of Caillard's family, inscribed "Donné à Monsieur Grutter, par son ami S. C. Caillard" on the half-title, with the rare four page sale schedule. First published by Debure in 1808, the catalogue was printed again, with the additional schedule inserted, for the posthumous auction of the library held in Paris on 26 November 1810, in an edition of 1,200 copies. Caillard (1737-1807), a French diplomatist and man of letters, obtained the post of secretary of legation at Parma (and then Cassel, Copenhagen, and Petersburg) through his acquaintance with Turgot. His exceptional library included classical texts, and works on science, natural history and voyages, all in the finest possible condition, many of which were large paper copies. Dibdin names Caillard as one of the most significant French bibliophiles of his time, and describes the catalogue in his best-known work, Bibliomania: "There were but twenty-five copies of this catalogue of truly valuable, and, in many respects, rare, and precious, books, printed upon large paper. This was the sale catalogue of the library of Caillard, who died in 1807, in his sixty-ninth year, and of whose bibliomaniacal spirit we have a most unequivocal proof in his purchasing De Cotte's celebrated uncut copy of the first printed Homer, at an enormous sum! Some excellent indexes close this volume" (The Cabinet, pp. 76-7). The large paper edition, limited to 25 copies only, was privately printed by Caillard in 1805. Octavo (203 x 127 mm). Contemporary calf, red morocco spine label, spine elaborately tooled in gilt with rope-twist and double fillet bands separating compartments of scale patterns decorated with stars, floral and scroll-work border to boards inside double rules, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Joints and extremities expertly restored. Boards marked with a few spill-burns, endpapers browned from turn-ins, otherwise a very good copy.
