Prolongeant sa thèse publiée par la Fédération des Amis du Perche en 1993, sous le titre Mutation d'un espace proto-industriel : Le Perche aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, il y étudie l'économie et la société de Nogent-le-Rotrou, capitale économique du Perche, des années 1660 à la Première Guerre mondiale. Pendant cette période, l'évolution et les structures démographiques font écho à la conjoncture longue et aux structures économiques spécifiques de la ville. Son économie avec son industrie textile des étamines à vocation internationale dans ses phases d'apogée et de déclin puis sa reconversion dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle avec l'apparition de nouvelles industries, façonnent des structures sociales profondément inégalitaires. Avant la Révolution, la coupure est profonde entre deux principales classes sociales : une grande bourgeoisie de négociants et un monde artisanal dépendant d'une petite bourgeoisie de fabricants d'étamines indépendants voire de marchands fabricants, de marchands merciers et drapiers, à laquelle se rattache la bourgeoisie de talents. Au XIXe siècle, après le déclin de l'industrie lainière, si cette structure sociale nogentaise est moins profondément inégalitaire, les oppositions ne disparaissent pas. Elles se modifient avec l'apparition de nouveaux acteurs économiques et de nouvelles classes sociales : la bourgeoisie industrielle et la classe ouvrière. Alors qu'au XIXe siècle, la transition industrielle des campagnes et des autres villes du Perche échoue, Nogent-le-Rotrou reste non sans heurs et malheurs la seule ville industrielle d'une région industriellement désertifiée et de plus en plus sous-peuplée en dépit d'un timide redressement démographique depuis une dizaine d'années. Malgré ce dynamisme industriel, le pôle urbain nogentais reste cependant insuffisant pour entraîner un développement autocentré du Perche dans son ensemble.
