During his distinguished career, he served as a pastor in New Haven, Connecticut, and later as a professor at Yale University. Bacon was a influential figure in 19th-century religious circles and a notable voice in the anti-slavery movement. Leonard Bacon's "attack" on the Pastoral Union and Theological Institute of Connecticut was part of a larger theological dispute that divided Congregationalists in the early 19th century. Bacon, who was a prominent figure in the "New Haven Theology" at Yale, was critical of the more conservative "Old Calvinist" theology associated with the Hartford-based Theological Institute.
