Pp. viii+160(last blank, page 155 misnumbered 156); demy 12mo; early calf boards with gilt single rule border, neatly rebacked with a later calf spine ruled in gilt compartments and with a gilt lettered red leather title label, edges of boards lightly worn (heaviest at fore-corners; book label of David Levine, Sydney, on upper pastedown, early inked inscription (possibly by the author?), at head of title page, a few pencilled annotations, a little light foxing and occasional slight soiling; T. Cadell, London, 1782. First edition. ESTC T101324. *The author, later known as Sir James Cambell (1745-1832), was the eldest son of John Callander of Craigforth. He joined the 51st regiment as ensign in 1759 and served in the Seven Years' War. After he succeeded to the estate of his cousin, Sir Alexander Cambell of Ardkinglass, he adopted the surname Campbell and began to use the title of baronet, to which he was not entitled. (He also was probably a bigamist, being described in the Dictionary of National Biography as 'three times married after a legal form').
