The author of this work was Major-General Sir Charles Edward Callwell (1859-1928), an Anglo-Irish officer of the British Army. He served in the artillery, as an intelligence officer, and as a staff officer and commander during the Second Boer War, and as Director of Operations during the First World War. He was also a noted writer of military biography, history, and theory. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards. The corners and bottom of the spine are lightly bumped and there is heavier bumping with a small tear and some nicks in the cloth at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with an oval purple stamp of the Cavalry Club on the back of the front free endpaper and the Club's bookplate (by Neville Wilkinson) on the front fixed endpaper.
