A book notable for its typography and decoration, it is the first known example of the Basle Roman typeface, this being cut by William Howard for the Chiswick Press; illustrations engraved by Mary Byfield. In all, a charming copy of this etiquette manual containing poems and prayers for women. Devotional poetry designed specifically to give comfort and guidance to women at key moments in life, The Wife's Manual acknowledges a surprisingly wide range of female experience. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles, 4 bands separating 5 compartments, 4 of which have blind tooled decorations, gently bruised top and tail. Joints good condition gently rubbed. Corners good condition gently bumped and worn. Boards good condition original yellow publisher's cloth binding stamped in gilt to the front board with blind tooled border and the same design to the rear blind stamped only. Page edges good condition gauffered page edges, all gilt, top edge slightly darkened. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition the paper has a small crack down the front hinge but it is intact, rear hinge sound, after the end paper both hinges (front and rear) are stained but holding. Paste downs good condition red paste downs, the rear paste down has the small bookseller's ticket of Leighton & Son. End papers good condition red end papers, free end papers are tanned and foxed. Title good condition decorative title page, lightly tanned with some foxing. Pages good condition half title page has a previous owners signature along the top edge dated 1854, the text on each page is contained within engraved borders, pages are lightly tanned with some foxing.
