Fils d'un conseiller au présidial de Toulouse, Jean de Cambolas (1565 - 1633) obtient en 1591 un office de conseiller puis de président aux enquêtes au parlement de Toulouse. Il a occupé diverses fonctions, notamment conseiller de Catherine de Médicis et de Marguerite de Lacger et est nommé conseiller d'état en 1625. Son fils François fera éditer 26 ans après sa mort son recueil des Décisions notables sur diverses questions du droit…., qui répertorie et commente 600 arrêts. Cet ouvrage clair et précis a connu un immense succès dont témoignent ses nombreuses rééditions jusqu'au XVIIIe siècle.
