He describes Neale as 'the highly admired & esteemed friend of the Walker Gray, as well as of Mr Jowett & Mr Gr.' Grinshaw feels that Lady Cholmley 'will not peruse the latter half of the Memoir without the deepest interest in so remarkable a narration of Conversion'.

Add to basketTrollope's letter: 3pp., 12mo. 48 lines. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper. Addressed, with postmarks, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Messrs. Cadell & Co. | Booksellers | Strand.' Trollope begins by announcing that he has 'a work nearly ready for the Press, wh. may probably be worth your attention [.] It is designed as companion to Mr Horne's work on the Scriptures, of wh. as you are the publishers, you may perhaps have no objection to engage in another, wh. is designed to comprise whatever is not supplied in that work for the use of the Theological Student, so that the two together will contain all that is necessary to be known by a Candidate for Holy Orders.' He proceeds with his description, before stating that it is his 'wish to dispose of the Copy-right, reserving of course a consideration in regard to any future Edition'. A note from the publishers at the foot of the page reads: 'NB: Conferred Septr 20 with Mr T respecting'. Above this, in pencil in another hand: 'Blomfield's [sic] Recensio Synoptica 8V.' Accompanying the letter is the statement of account, 2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper with chipping and a few closed tears. The first page is headed 'No. 1500 | Trollope's Analecta Theologica Vol 1.' Dated 28 December 1829, it gives the itemised costs of printing, paper, interest, '11 Copies to Stationers Hall', and advertisements, totalling £468 15s 0d. The second page is headed '1835 Augt. | Volume 2 - No. 1500', with a similar breakdown giving £543 15s 0d. At the foot of both pages are figures for 'C. H. S.' in 'bds [boards]', totalling £712 for volume 1 and £843 15s 0d for volume 2.

Add to basket3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight damage to a corner of the second leaf. Pencil note in another hand at foot of last page. Hamilton (1781-1876), Oriental Secretary to the British Embassy at Constantinople, published 'Antar: A Bedoueen Romance' with the London publisher John Murray in 1819. The present letter therefore relates to a pre-publicity copy of the book, which Wrighte has read with 'great pleasure'. Readers are, he considers, 'much obliged to Mr. Terrick Hamilton for presenting it to the Public in such an elegant English dress'. He complains that the book 'contains but little information with respect to the domestic habits of the Arabians' and no allusion to the Red Sea (despite the fact that it 'relates to the different Tribes of Arabs in Arabia Felix, bordering on the Coasts of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf'), but finds that it has 'every mark of genuineness'. He also discusses 'the Arabic names for the Constellations' and 'the pasturing of Cattle'. The latter part of the letter concerns his son Henry. He explains that he feels 'anxiety to get him into some situation within the Church or in some civil capacity at Home or abroad', and suggests that the reason why he has not replied to Brydges's 'kind Letter concerning him', may be that he 'has been improvident and I hope is now fully sensible of it, and is perhaps ashamed to write to you'. The Gentleman's Magazine, November 1854, carries a short obituary for Wrighte.

Add to basket4to, 5 pp, on five loose and uniform leaves. Very good, on lightly aged paper. The first leaf is headed 'C. W. S. Acc' and is initialled at the foot 'Rt C. Wm. S.' The second is headed 'Sheet (2)', with the rest numbered 3 to 5. It is clear from sheets 2 to 5 that one leaf - what should have been 'Sheet (1)' - is lacking. Provides a fascinating insight into the practicalities of British nineteenth-century exploration, and compliments Shepherd's 'The North-West Peninsula of Iceland: being the journal of a tour in Iceland in the spring and summer of 1862', published by Longmans, Green and Co. in 1867. In April of 1862, with 'certain ornithological inquiries in view', Shepherd travelled from England to Iceland on the Arcturus, 'in the company of my friends Mr. H. M. Upcher, of Sherringham Hall, Norfolk, and Mr. G. G. Fowler, of Gunton Hall, Suffolk'. The accounts include advances 'To Fowler' and 'To Upcher'. The first page carries columns of credits and debits, including £8 0s 1d received 'from the Sale of Ponies'. (Shepherd's book ends with a description of the sale of '[o]ur stud', but does not give the total fetched by the sale.) The other four pages provide itemised entries (around 25 to a page) for the expenditure on the trip. These include £5 to 'Frenchman and Man to row us ashore', £6 'To men who rowed to Surtobrand and took us on board the Metha', £1 to 'Boy with eggs at Holar', £14 to 'Exchange horse that fell into the river at ', 3s to 'Boy for lost Tackle Bag', and, on the group's return, 2s 6d for 'Beer at Adelphi'. From the Shepherd family archives.

In a later sage green cloth-case binding, gilt titled to spine. The German playwright and novelist August Friedrich Ferdinand von Kotzebue (1761-1819) worked as a consul in Russia and Germany. One of his books was burned during the Wartburg Festival's gathering of Protestant student activists in 1817. Two years later Kotzebue was assassinated by Karl Ludwig Sand, a militant student member of the Burschenschaften. His murder led Metternich to issue the Carlsbad Decrees, cracking down on the press and restricting academic freedom. In generally good condition with some age-toning and scattered spotting.
