The subject, b. 1799, d. 1889, was an American businessman and politician who represented Pennsylvania in the United States Senate. He was Lincoln's Secretary of War under Lincoln at the start of the American Civil War. Allegations of corruption and lax management led to his demotion to Ambassador to Russia in January 1862.
