This book provides a detailed survey of tintinnoina, an abundant and significant group of oceanic protists, based on samples collected during the Carnegie expedition. The author compares species found in the Carnegie samples with those reported by other researchers to present a comprehensive picture of the diversity and distribution of the tintinnoina, helping the reader understand their significance in marine ecosystems. The book's exploration of the morphology and ecology of tintinnoina aids in a greater understanding of the natural history of the ocean and its inhabitants. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. This book provides an unparalleled exploration of the Tintinnoinea, a fascinating group of pelagic ciliates found in the illuminated zone of the sea. As the main quantitative constituent of the marine microplankton, Tintinnoinea's vibrant diversity has led to its classification into thirteen families and sixty-two genera, comprising over seven hundred species. The text comprehensively details the Tintinnoinea's morphology, with a focus on the minute organization of its secreted and often highly ornamented lorica, an exoskeleton that characterizes the group. The authors trace the evolution of the lorica from simple cylindrical forms to the complex structures seen in the higher families, providing insights into the adaptive strategies and ecological success of these microorganisms. Through extensive analysis of the Tintinnoinea's distribution in the Eastern Tropical Pacific, the book sheds light on the relationships between structural evolution and environmental influences, revealing patterns of frequency and diversity that shape the dynamics of marine ecosystems. This in-depth examination establishes Tintinnoinea as a cornerstone of marine biology, highlighting their ecological significance and evolutionary adaptability. Soft Cover. Condition: Very Good. Soft cover, 4to, in printed brown wraps, thirty-six plates of black and white illustrations, including map of species distribution. This scientific report on new species of single-celled plankton, found in both marine and freshwater sources, was made from collections taken by Prof. Agassiz and his assistants from Harvard's Museum of Natural History in the early twentieth century, on his third scientific cruise of 1904-05. Tintinnoinea are thought to be an important indicator of marine pollution. This "Albatross" expedition by Agassiz included one of the co-authors Prof. Kofoid, as well as others. Archeological stops and inland excursions were made at Cook's Bay in French Polynesia, La Perouse Bay in Hawaii, on the way to their main destination of Easter Island, and threafter on to the Galapagos Islands. CONDITION: Very Good. Some tears to wraps at head of spine (rear) and foot of spine (front) and crease affecting front of wraps and first couple of pages.
