Add to basketHardcover with Dust Jacket. Condition: FAIR. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. [15], 2-472 pp. Large 8vo, sewn binding in burgundy cloth, gilt spine lettering. Ex-private library, a lending service that didn't catch on; highlighting and pen markings to about 1/3 of the book, including Genesis through chapter 22; D…J tips worn, spine label removed, now wrapped in mylar. Exceedingly scarce in trade and difficult to locate in libraries as it is often undifferentiated from the revised second edition in listings. The Rev. G. Henton Davies was a British Baptist scholar tasked with composing a commentary on the book of Genesis for the Southern Baptist Convention Sunday School Board's new 12-volume commentary series. Davies's interpretive approach incorporated numerous elements which would raise the ire of a growing SBC contingent advocating a literal interpretation of all portions of Scripture. Most horrifying was his *sachkritik* analysis of Noah's Flood and the Sacrifice of Isaac. In the latter, Davies insisted the goad to kill the promised Issac was not a divine command but a projection of Abraham's troubled psyche: 'Indeed what Christian or humane conscience could regard such a command as coming from God?' Through great controversy, this first volume would be cancelled, recalled, pulped, and rewritten by a new author. The fracas over Davies's commentary marks the first great flexing of the ascendent Fundamentalist faction's power that would culminate in the 'SBC Takeover' of the denomination in the 80's.

If located, please cause his immediate arrest and notify the undersigned or the nearest Post Office Inspector by telegraph or telephone collect. OFFENSE: Jerome Poster is a hall letter box thief who steals bank statements and uses the information contained therein to prepare bogus checks drawn on the accounts of legitimate depositors. In some instances he has succeeded in having these checks certified and has passed them for American Express Travelers' Cheques. Also, steals letters containing checks which he passes. He travels extensively by plane and stays at good hotels under various names. He is attracted to women who describe him as "cheap". He has a fancy for convertible automobiles. The Post Office Department has a standing reward of $200 for the arrest and conviction of any offender on the charge of theft from mail receptacles. J. H. MARKS, Post Office Inspector in Charge, Chicago 7, Illinois. Telephone HARRison 4820-4821 D. H. STEPHENS, Post Office Inspector in Charge, Philadelphia 1, Pa. Telephone: BARing 2-8000 Ext. 418 Phila. P.O. - 12-8-47 - 50000" Jerome Poster was apprehended after a multi-city evasion. He was arraigned on federal government forgery and mail theft charges in Philadelphia in March 1948. Before this flyer was distributed, in June 1947, while serving a previous term at Holmesburg County Prison in Philadelphia, Poster used a smuggled hypodermic needle syringe to extract fluid from his own eyeballs. He intentionally blinded himself in a desperate bid to permanently halt his own compulsive criminal career. He stated that if he could no longer see, he would no longer forge signatures. Examining federal physicians disputed how much of his vision was destroyed by the self-inflicted injury. By late 1947 and early 1948, he was captured again and photographed being led through federal courtrooms completely blind, relying on U.S. Marshals to guide him. Jerome Poster spent the remaining years of his life in and out of the federal prison system and institutional confinement. His self-blinding did not put an end to his legal struggles or his compulsions. After Poster used a smuggled syringe to blind himself, prison doctors at Holmesburg County Prison acted quickly. Their emergency treatment successfully restored most of his eyesight. The severe nature of his self-inflicted injury caused a sympathetic judge to reduce his bail from $25,000 to just $500 so he could seek outside specialized medical care. Instead of seeking treatment, Poster skipped town, and went right back to forging checks under the alias "Raymond Benet". Postal Inspectors tracked his new bad checks and cornered him once again. When recaptured, he told the arresting inspector, "I thought I could shake you guys. I should have known better." On April 9, 1948, a federal judge ended his cross-country run by sentencing the 24-year-old "Boy Wonder of Forgery" to a straight 10-year prison sentence. Because of his self-destructive tendencies and compulsion, after the 1948 conviction his years in prison were closely monitored. Curiosly, the poster described him as "Jewish but looks Italian" I guess his features do not fit the stereotype image of a Jew. (illustrator).

Contact seller4-star sellerGood. Toning. Closed tear extending 2.5 inches from bottom edge near center professionally repaired on verso. Closed edge tears. Size 35 x 47 Inches. A rare, large-format 1975 urban planning map of the west side of Los Angeles, prepared by the City Planning Department. Among other features, it discusses proposed land use and inc…ludes a late representation of the canceled Beverly Hills Freeway. A Closer Look The map covers a large area between Downtown Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, bounded by Doheny Dr. in the west, Hoover St. in the east, Melrose Ave. in the north, and Pico and Venice Blvds. in the south. Near top is the Beverly Hills Freeway, a planned project that failed to materialize (discussed below). Major streets are labeled throughout, while areas of residential and commercial density are shaded according to the legend at the bottom, especially in the eastern part of the area seen here, largely around today's Koreatown. Four groups of city blocks are marked with Roman numerals. Circled numbers correspond to particular buildings and projects. At this time, like many cities in the U.S., many of these neighborhoods were suffering from decline but rebounded in the following decades, thanks largely to effective urban planning, represented by this map, and the immigrant groups that settled in the area in significant numbers. Further to the west, the noticeable geometric shapes between Wilshire Blvd. and Third St. is the Parklabrea complex along the Miracle Mile. Covering 160 acres, it is one of the largest housing complexes in the United States, consisting of 13 high-rise towers and several dozen two-story buildings, containing over 2,500 housing units in all. Beverly Hills Freeway This map is notable for including a late appearance of the Beverly Hills Freeway, a planned but never-constructed freeway that would have drastically altered the neighborhoods it was to traverse. The Beverly Hills Freeway (earlier called the 'Santa Monica Parkway') would have extended the Glendale Freeway (CA-2) westwards to link the Hollywood Freeway (U.S.-101) and Interstate-405, largely following the path of Santa Monica Blvd. But the project ran into fierce opposition from homeowners and, as it was a state route rather than an interstate, funding difficulties. Although the state had secured right-of-way along much of the route, the Beverly Hills City Council, after years of support, came out against the project in 1971, the same year of this map's production, effectively killing the plan. But it was only in 1975, the year of this map's publication, that it was officially removed from planning documents, explaining its being crossed out here. Publication History and Census This map was produced by the Graphics Section of the Los Angeles City Planning Department on Jun 10, 1975. The Citizen Advisory Committee referred to in the title was created due to the backlash against freeways such as the Beverly Hills Freeway and centralized urban planning in general. We have been unable to locate any other examples of this map in institutional holdings or on the market, though it is possible that the Planning Department or the City Archives and Records Center retain an example.
