Con il suo comitato di redazione composto da Luigi Ariotti, Franco De Poli (anche direttore responsabile), Adele Faccio, Cesare Faccio, Bruno Galvani, Ida Garzonio, Olga Karasso, Maria Pia Matteotti, Ermanno G. Re, Doriana Saulle Gabetti, Lydia Zanetti, Adriana Zanoletti, «Il canguro. Bimestrale di cultura» avviò le pubblicazioni nel settembre-ottobre 1967. Stampato a Reggio-Emilia dalla tipografia Poligrafici e con sede a Milano in via Andrea Costa, il periodico legato alla contestazione si presentò all'esordio con un numero dedicato per metà a Wilhelm Reich. In chiusura, l'editoriale «Significato di un canguro» recita: «Wilhelm Reich, al quale "il canguro" dedica quasi metà del suo primo numero, potrebbe essere la bandiera e il programma di una rivista. Proprio per questo, a Reich, al suo pensiero, agli sviluppi delle sue intuizioni, intendiamo dedicare parecchio anche del nostro spazio futuro. [.] Resta da spiegare il significato di una testate: che, è bene dirlo subito, non ha reconditi sensi antropologici o zoologici. Semplicemente la nostra rivista "contiene" un inserto, o più inserti, che saranno via via dedicati a opere brevi: narrative, poetiche, saggistiche, o di testimonianza, e possibilmente anche alle arti figurative». 425 x 310 mm, fascicoli autocopertinati fermati con due punti metallici, 15 pagine a fascicolo, numerazione progressiva.
