Provenance: Latimer Clark. Responding to Clark's request for a photograph. Canning assisted Charles Tilston Bright in the laying of the first Atlantic cable in… 1857 and 1858, and supervised the manufacture and laying of the second and third Atlantic cables in 1865 and 1866. After the third Atlantic cable was successfully laid, Canning oversaw the successful retrieval of the second cable, which had broken and sunk prior to the completion of its installation.
