Decorated cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition, First Printing. A SIGNIFICANT CONFEDERATE MEMOIR AND BIOGRAPHY PUBLISHED BY THE ESTEEMED NEALE PUBLISHING COMPANY, DOCUMENTING THE LIFE OF ELLISON CAPERS. A Charleston native, Capers rose from a regimental major to Brigadier General, serving with distinction during the Atlanta campaign and the Battle of Franklin. Following the war, he entered the ministry, eventually becoming the Episcopal Bishop of South Carolina. This work is a cornerstone of the Neale bibliography, prized for its detailed military history and its account of the post-war Episcopal Church in the South. This copy features a contemporary presentation inscription. KEY FEATURES +++ Imprint: New York: The Neale Publishing Company, 1912. [First Edition / First Printing]. +++ Reference: Krick 70. +++ Binding: Original purple-blue cloth with ornate gilt titles and red borders; top edge gilt. +++ Visuals: Frontispiece portrait and several B/W photo plates. +++ Military Content: Extensive detail on the Siege of Charleston, the Atlanta Campaign, and the Tennessee Campaign. CONDITION: Good to Very Good -- Bindings are tight and square. Text is clean with light, even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear with rubbing to the spine tips and lower edges. The spine is notably sun-faded (common for this purple cloth), and the gilt remains legible but dimmed on the spine. Features a presentation inscription on the front flyleaf. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- Ellison Capers represents a specific archetype of the 19th-century Southerner: the 'Soldier-Priest.' His transition from the Citadel's first graduating class to a Brigadier General in the Army of Tennessee, and finally to the Bishopric of South Carolina, mirrors the cultural arc of the post-war South. This biography is highly regarded not just for its military detail, but for its insight into the 'Reconstruction of the Soul' in the Episcopal Church. As a bibliographic entity, this is a cornerstone of the Neale Publishing Company catalog. Neale was the premier publisher of Confederate history in the early 20th century, known for providing a platform for Southern veterans to document their experiences with a high level of literary and physical production quality. Krick's inclusion of this title in his bibliography (Krick 70) solidifies its status as an essential piece of Confederate historiography. SUBJECTS: American Civil War, Confederate States Army, Army of Tennessee, South Carolina History, Episcopal Church, Military Biography, Reconstruction, Biography, Military History, Confederate Imprint.

Top edge gilt. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Light rubbing to edges, corners, and spine ends; spine has faded, else bright. Interior is clean and tight. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: Ellison Capers was a Confederate General officer and Anglican Bishop. Although a distinguished Civil War officer, he is probably better remembered for his later career in the Episcopal Church. Appointed Major of South Carolina Volunteers, he took part in the April 12, 1861 shelling of Fort Sumter, initially served in coastal defense, and in 1863 was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel after helping to recruit the 24th South Carolina Infantry. Fighting in North and South Carolina as well as at Vicksburg, Capers was wounded multiple times; he served under General Braxton Bragg at Chickamauga and was advanced to Colonel during the Atlanta Campaign. Receiving brigade command following the death of General Gist at Franklin, Tennessee on November 30, 1864, he was appointed Brigadier General effective March 1, 1865. Captured at Bentonville, North Carolina, in late March of 1865, he went to Columbia, South Carolina, at the end of the war and was appointed Secretary of State. REFERENCES: KRICK 70: "Less than one hundred pages of this biography covers Capers' Confederate military career, the heaviest emphasis being on the 1863 and 1864 campaigns. Pre-war material includes some extracts from Capers' journals. The largest part of the volume covers the bishop's later career as a clergyman in South Carolina, and as Chancellor of the University of the South.".
