Mounted Photograph. Condition: Near Fine. A circa 1895 mounted photo of a Rock Watchman working near his home, immediately to the right of the tunnel, captioned on the verso "Paddy Fannan (Tannan?) washing his shirt in front of his residence at the tunnel 3 miles East of Field" and "With The Seasons Greetings" written gilt ink along bottom edge. Photo measures 5.5 x 4 inches and is in fine condition, the mount measures 6.5 x 4.25 inches, w. edge wear, rubbing to gilt of greeting and minor soil on verso. We are unsure who the photographer is as the photo is not on a credited mount, however, this photo is credited to Norman Caple and catalogued as SGN 1508 by the Much ado about Vancouver, BC & Canada online group.
Loose Photograph. Condition: Good or Better. An early birds-eye photo of Vancouver and it's busy harbor, taken from the rooftop of the CPR Hotel circa 1895. Measuring 7.25 x 9.5 inches wide and captioned along the bottom edge "1141. Vancouver, B.C. , from C.P.R. Hotel, looking N.E. / N. Caple & Co., Photo, Vancouver, B.C." We estimate the date of this image to be c. 1895, as there is a streetcar visible in the lower left [service started June 27, 1891], the lack of any steamships in the harbor [i.e. tall ships only] and the photographer's business name credited in the caption is as a solo entity. Photo is toned with some crinkling and creases evident and a few minor closed tears to edges, which are also unevenly trimmed. "After Trueman and Caple had been dissolved towards the end of 1893, both men continued in the photographic business as N. Caple and Company and R.H. Trueman and Company. Caple seems to have given up advertising himself as a photographer by 1897." Camera Workers 1858-1950.

Photograph. Condition: Near Very Good. The earliest - and only, 19th century Norman Caple Birds-Eye View photograph we have ever seen of Canmore, the now popular resort town in the Canadian Rockies. An albumen silver salts photograph, measuring 7 x 9.5 inches wide, and titled in negative along the lower edge "1306. Canmore, and Bow River Valley from Cochrane Coal Mines C.P.R. / N. Caple & Co., Photo. Vancouver, B.C." Circa mid-1890s, but not earlier than 1893, as Caple had established his own studio after his partnership with R.H. Trueman dissolved towards the end of 1893. Photo with remnants verso from a previous mounting, faint creases, some fading and a few small tears with tiny emulsion losses. An unusual case where rare content, trumps minor condition issues. Capturing here a busy and nascent 19th century Canmore, this image enlarges well to reveal much action and goings-on in the erstwhile coal town and its surrounds. Ref. Camera Workers, 1858-1950.
