Spine is split along front edge, and part of rear, boards have some wear to edges, offsetting to prelims., previous owner's signatures to half title (one part defaced), library blind stamp to title page, but no other markings, overall a very good copy of a scarce title. "This hunter (St. John) lived for many years in the South during the forties and fifties. . Each chapter, usually limited to one kind of wildlife, begins with a rather technical but informative treatise on the description and the habits of that animal. . The outstanding merit of this rare and fascinating book is the author's meticulous attention to detail, based upon his wide range of activity and his particular flare for recording realistically and vividly his pursuit of fauna of the American South." Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Limited to 274 copies, this is number 222. Includes an essay by Len Ainsworth as to the indentity of the author 'Captian Flack' - he remains a mystery. The Texan Rifle-Hunter was originally published in London in 1866 and purports to describe the Texas travels and hunting adventures of a Texas Ranger Captain, although no official Ranger rolls indicate a Captain Flack ever existed. Howes thought Flack could be the English writer Percy B. St. John, but no one is sure. According to Ainsworth, J. Frank Dobie looked into the mystery in London and was shown the original publisher's records - they made their royalty check out to Captain Flack and it was endorsed as such. Clean and beautiful book in a clean slipcase. Ships same or next business day very well protected in a box. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 60 pages.
