Cloth. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A scarce first English edition of this work on Arctic exploration. Collated: Complete with folding map of Greenland. With 16 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. A detailed account of the expedition of Wilhelm August Graah, a Danish naval officer and explorer, to map the uninhabited eastern coast of Greenland in 1828-1830. Graah set out on the expedition with the purpose of searching for lost Eastern Norse Settlements, Icelandic colonies supposed to settled along Greenland's East Coast. Graah's expedition reached as far as Dannebrog Islands but ultimately returned without having reached the inhabited areas. A scarce and fascinating account with the large folding map of the Greenland coasts in detail and in relationship to Iceland and Canada. With the bookplate of John Henry Evans, an early 20th century Mormon educator and writer. In a cloth binding. Externally, sound with wear to the spine and splitting to the cloth at the joints. Fading to spine and boards. Personal bookplate of John Henry Evans to front pastedown and ink signature to front free-endpaper. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean with some light spots and marginal age toning in places. Slight cockling caused by binding to some pages. Offsetting from map to title page. Folding map is spotted with a few small closed tears at creases but otherwise bright and smart. Good. book.
